Election 2019 MASALA

Namaste!

It seems like a very long time since the last UK parliamentary election in June 2017, two months prematurely called by the then PM Theresa May as David Cameron had stepped down already. Conservatives were riding high at start; nothing could go wrong and due to couple of unfortunate misinterpretation of manifesto terms gave the socialists unexpected edge in later part rendering a Tory win only with a very slim and uncomfortable majority having to depend solely on the 10 DUP seats.

Since then the main debating subject of this parliament is whether to abide by the Brexit referendum result of Leave rather than remain in the EU. It has taken centre stage and claimed two seating Prime Ministers and now we have Boris Johnson who lost battle to exit by 31/10/2019 as per his promise on the steps of 10 Down Street. The MPs has dithered and played dirty politics aided by court cases brought courtesy Gina Miller. Admittedly the result was very close which would suggest a softer Brexit however as witnessed by dramas, expulsions and withdrawing of party whip from some members who dissented from Party line (or even from the wishes of their constituents) perhaps egged on by ex-Speaker John Bercow.

So, Mr Johnson has called for election, second only since 1923 being held during the Christmas period and he launched it yesterday as did Labour’s Corbyn on different themes.  Whichever side of the divide you are it will be watershed moment for our lives in the UK. All parties will be dancing around this question, hardliners on both sides will be trying to assert themselves through votes, punishing those MPs who reneged on their wish and hopefully giving a decisive message by forming a majority strong government so as not to repeat the sorry state of affairs which have ensued since 2017.

The Indian community has to play very important role. Recent events relating to the actions by pro-Kashmir groups opposite our High Commission and continuous threat to our peaceful community are not condemned by their benefactor the Labour Party. Tactful voting in Labour marginal constituency will be the answer.
