In Indian cricket, success is often measured not only by runs scored and wickets taken, but also by the impact one leaves on future generations. Few individuals embody this philosophy better than Narendra Singh, a distinguished former Ranji Trophy cricketer, accomplished coach, and mentor to aspiring young talent.

With an impressive playing career spanning 14 years in the Ranji Trophy representing the Services team and North Zone cricket, Narendra Singh has established himself as one of the most respected figures in Indian cricket development. During the 1997 season, he emerged as the second-highest run scorer in North Zone cricket, demonstrating the consistency and determination that would later define his coaching career.

Today, Singh is dedicated to developing the next generation of cricketers as a coach working at the grassroots level with Under-16 boys through the Delhi & District Cricket Association (DDCA) and district cricket programmes. His mission is clear: to identify young talent, build character, and prepare players not just technically, but mentally, to perform under pressure.

A highly qualified cricket professional, Singh holds the prestigious BCCI Level A Coaching Certification, ICC Level 2 Coaching Qualification, and is an NIS Topper and BCCI Fitness Trainer. His expertise has enabled him to coach various state teams across India and has served as Head Coach of the Arunachal Pradesh Women’s Under-23 Team.

His cricketing journey extends beyond India. Singh also played professional cricket for “Essex County Cricket Club”, gaining valuable international exposure that broadened his understanding of the game. Reflecting on that chapter of his career, he expresses heartfelt gratitude to his uncle, Harpal Singh, based in the United Kingdom, whose unwavering support made his overseas cricketing experience possible.

Throughout his journey, Singh remains deeply appreciative of those who guided him in his formative years. He particularly acknowledges his coach, Deepak Sharma, who played a pivotal role in shaping his career and helping him navigate the challenges of competitive cricket. According to Singh, the lessons learned during those early years continue to influence his coaching philosophy today.

His role models include legendary Indian spinner Harbhajan Singh, whom he played alongside during their early national-level careers. Singh also credits former Indian opener Navjot Singh Sidhu for his guidance, encouragement, and inspiration. Another notable contemporary from his playing days is Amol Muzumdar, who currently serves as Head Coach of the Indian Women’s National Cricket Team.

Beyond the cricket field, Singh’s achievements reflect a lifetime dedicated to excellence and service. An Ex-Junior Commissioned Officer of the Indian Navy, he received the prestigious Indian Navy CNC Best Sports Person Award from the Government of India. The discipline, leadership, and resilience developed during his military service continue to influence his approach to coaching young athletes.

Singh is also grateful for the support and mentorship he has received from senior cricket administrators, including Rohan Jaitley, DDCA President, and Shikha Khanna Kumar, Vice President of DDCA, both of whom have encouraged and guided his efforts in cricket development.

At the heart of Singh’s coaching philosophy is a commitment to developing strong mindsets. While technical skills are important, he believes that success in modern cricket depends equally on mental strength, self-belief, and the ability to perform under pressure.

“The most important values I teach young players are trust, confidence, and the mindset to perform in challenging situations,” says Singh. “Every player has talent, but it is character, discipline, and belief that help them succeed when the pressure is at its highest.”

As he continues working with young cricketers at the grassroots level, Narendra Singh remains focused on nurturing future champions who not only excel on the field but also become disciplined, responsible individuals off it. His vision extends beyond producing successful cricketers; he aims to build future leaders who represent the values of Indian cricket with pride and integrity.

With decades of playing experience, international exposure, military discipline, and an unwavering commitment to youth development, Narendra Singh continues to leave a lasting impact on Indian cricket-one young player at a time.
