Shree Damania Machhi Mahajan Community, Leicester UK established in UK since 2003. We originally came from Daman, India we belong to the fishermen community.

We are protesting against the current issues in Daman:

97 houses being demolished by the Administrator of Daman and Diu, and they have made poor and old habitants homeless. They have been living there for generations and have spent their entire lives living there. They have been given a three-day notice; not even given a chance to remove their household items, whereas the local BJP MP has assured them that he won’t let anyone destroy their houses. These people are poor and illiterate and don’t have any option other than to trust the MP. They have tried to contact the MP and the local councillor but no one has come to support them. These people have lost their lifetime earnings. These houses had all facilities like electricity; water connection; gas and these people have been paying council tax.

When they bulldozed some of the houses, the public themselves went for a strike for four days in order to protest but this act had no effect to the Administrator.

Among the 97 houses, only three to four people have been given the houses from government organisation: Pradhan Mantri Avash Yogana. The remaining have just been stranded alone, which is extremely unjust.

Hence, we, from the Daman and Diu local community, feel that we should gather and fight against this obvious injustice.

We are inviting all the news media to help us project our message: to help the unfortunate residents in Moti Daman.

The protest is planned for  Sunday 1st December 2019 at 1.00pm in Cossington Park, Belgrave, Leicester UK. You are requested to come and contribute to fight for the victims, to show they are not alone.

The Administrator is a very powerful person, so no one has courage to argue against him not even the MP. Therefore, we will make the effort to aid the homeless people and to speak out to rehabilitate them. We are inviting all the Indian news channels for help. We hope that you’ll take interest in this affair and kindly acknowledge and confirm your attendance.

  1. It is unfortunate that the houses are demolished probably on the basis of illegal construction hence due process should have been followed and genuine concerns should be heard. Not sure how a protest here will generate effective support rather than writing to the authorities or perhaps PM Modi
