London: 4 Nov.2026 The spirit of Diwali, the festival of light, hope and righteousness, was celebrated with great enthusiasm and dignity at the historic House of Lords, in an event organised by the Hindu Forum of Britain.

The prestigious gathering brought together an impressive array of parliamentarians, political leaders, peers, mayors, councillors and representatives of the British Hindu community. The occasion was a significant recognition of the contribution, cultural heritage and growing presence of the Hindu community in British public life.

Among the distinguished guests were Bob Blackman MP, Lord Rami Ranger, Lord Dholakia and Lord Popat. The event was further honoured by the presence of Kemi Badenoch, Leader of the Conservative Party, whose attendance demonstrated the importance of recognising and engaging with Britain’s diverse communities.

Hindu community leaders and representatives from various organisations also attended, including Surinder Gautama, President of the World Council of Hindus UK (VHP),  and Ashish Cunnawar of Insight UK alongside many other prominent community figures.

The celebration was much more than a traditional Diwali gathering. It was an opportunity for the British Hindu community to come together, demonstrate its collective strength and reaffirm its commitment to British society.

The presence of community representatives from different organisations, temples and cultural institutions highlighted the importance of unity and cooperation among Hindus. Despite differences in language, regional background, traditions and organisational affiliations, the community shares a common cultural and civilisational heritage.

There is a growing need for Hindu organisations to work together, develop a stronger collective voice and encourage greater participation in civic, political and public life. Events such as this provide valuable opportunities to build bridges, strengthen relationships with political representatives and ensure that the concerns, aspirations and contributions of the Hindu community are properly understood and recognised.

The British Hindu community has made significant contributions to the country’s economic, professional, educational, cultural and charitable life. Its commitment to family values, education, voluntary service, enterprise and social responsibility deserves wider recognition.

The Message of Diwali

Diwali carries a timeless message: the triumph of light over darkness, good over evil and knowledge over ignorance. For the Hindu community in Britain, it also serves as a reminder of the responsibility to preserve our rich heritage, pass our traditions to future generations and contribute positively to the wider society.

The celebration at the House of Lords was therefore not simply an occasion to observe a religious festival. It was also a demonstration of Hindu identity, community solidarity and the importance of constructive engagement with Britain’s democratic institutions.

As the Hindu community continues to grow and strengthen its presence in Britain, it must recognise that unity, organisation and active participation are essential to securing a respected voice for future generations.

The Diwali celebration at the House of Lords was a welcome reminder that when the Hindu community comes together, it can celebrate its heritage with pride, strengthen its collective identity and make a meaningful contribution to the future of Britain.
