London, 31 October 2026: The World Council of Hindus UK (WCH UK), in collaboration with the Sardar Patel Memorial Society UK (SPMS UK), commemorated National Unity Day – Ekta Divas 2026 at the Ilford Hindu Centre, celebrating the extraordinary life, leadership and enduring legacy of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, the Iron Man of India.

The occasion brought together distinguished guests, parliamentarians, spiritual leaders, community representatives, families and members of the British Hindu community in a powerful celebration of unity, heritage, service and collective responsibility.

Among the principal guests attending the celebration were Lord Rami Ranger (Chairman of the Sardar Patel Memorial Society UK); His Holiness Rajrajeshwar Guruji; Jas Athwal (Member of Parliament for Ilford South); Mahesh Patel; and Surinder Gautam (President of the World Council of Hindus UK).

Their presence added significance to an evening dedicated to a leader whose determination and statesmanship played a defining role in bringing together more than 560 princely states and laying the foundations for the political unity of modern India.

The programme began on a spiritual and patriotic note with the Hanuman Chalisa, followed by Deep Prajwalan, the ceremonial lighting of the lamp, and the Indian National Anthem.

The gathering heard inspiring addresses reflecting on Sardar Patel’s contribution to India’s freedom struggle, national integration, strong institutions and public service.

A special commemorative tribute highlighted Patel’s courage, administrative ability and determination to place national interest above division. The evening reinforced his timeless message that unity is not merely a matter of convenience, but a matter of principle.

One of the most memorable highlights of the celebration was the participation of the younger generation. Children delivered excellent and inspiring speeches on Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, speaking about his life, his contribution to India’s independence, his role in uniting India and why his legacy continues to be remembered today.

Their confident presentations were warmly appreciated by the audience and carried a particularly important message: Sardar Patel’s legacy belongs not only to history, but also to future generations.

Seeing young British Hindus speaking with knowledge and pride about Sardar Patel demonstrated the importance of passing India’s history, values and cultural heritage from one generation to the next.

The celebration was further enriched by a colourful cultural programme, showcasing the depth and beauty of India’s artistic traditions. A major highlight was a graceful Kuchipudi dance performance, bringing one of India’s celebrated classical dance traditions to the stage and receiving warm appreciation from the audience.

The wider cultural programme added energy and colour to the evening, demonstrating how music, dance, speech and artistic expression can connect generations while preserving cultural heritage.

The performances by the children and young participants were particularly meaningful. They demonstrated that the strongest way to preserve heritage is not simply to speak about it, but to actively involve the next generation in celebrating and carrying it forward.

For the British Hindu community, the message of Ekta Divas carries particular significance.

It demonstrates that communities can proudly preserve their heritage, traditions and identity while simultaneously making a strong and positive contribution to British society.

The gathering reinforced a simple but powerful message: our diversity should strengthen us, our heritage should inspire us, and our unity should enable us to serve wider society together.

The World Council of Hindus UK continues to work towards bringing Hindu organisations and communities together, promoting Hindu cultural and spiritual values and encouraging constructive engagement with wider British society.

The Sardar Patel Memorial Society UK continues its efforts to preserve and promote Sardar Patel’s legacy and ensure that future generations understand the principles of courage, integrity, leadership and national unity that defined his life.

The celebration concluded with a vote of thanks recognising the dignitaries, community leaders, executive committee members, volunteers, children, cultural performers, teachers, parents and supporters whose collective efforts made the programme a success.

The formal programme was followed by Aarti and Bhojan Prasad, bringing everyone together in a spirit of devotion, fellowship and community.

The evening was much more than a commemoration of a great historical figure. It became a celebration of the very principle Sardar Patel championed throughout his life – unity through shared purpose.

From the words of distinguished speakers to the inspiring speeches of children, and from the traditional Kuchipudi performance to the coming together of community leaders and families, the evening demonstrated that Sardar Patel’s vision continues to resonate across generations and across borders.

As Britain’s Hindu community looks towards the future, his message remains as relevant as ever:

Sardar Patel united a nation. It is now the responsibility of every generation to preserve that spirit of unity, strengthen our communities and pass those values to those who follow us.

Jai Hind.
