“Sewa International’s Toilet and Hygiene Project for Girl Children was planned to provide sanitation facilities to the vulnerable sections of Indian society, especially in the context of social and cultural norms about open defecation. Despite the many rights guaranteed to the people under the Indian Constitution, large sections of the Indian population are denied basic public facilities, and women and girl children face several challenges everyday just to attend nature calls in a safe and secure environment in the schools that they attend.

Sewa’s Toilet and Hygiene Project has currently undertaken the task of building toilets in the city of Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh, and in towns and villages of North Karnataka, with generous funding from Google. In the accompanying video you will see the progress made in some of the towns, and listen to the testimonials from the teachers in the schools and the gratitude expressed by the school children.

In a recent survey conducted by Sewa International, project managers have identified more than 1000+ schools across various parts of India that have an immediate need for toilets in the school premises. Given the enormity of the task,  more funding from corporations and individuals will help us achieve the goal of providing every such school safe, clean, and good sanitation facilities that will go a long way in making education and schooling attractive to the students and teachers.”
