New Delhi, Sep 1 (UNI) Tamil Nadu BJP chief Dr Tamilisai Soundararajan, former Union Minister and senior BJP leader Bandaru Dattatreya and former Union Minister Arif Mohammed Khan are among the new appointees as Governors by President Ram Nath Kovind on Sunday.
The President also appointed Himachal Pradesh Governor Kalraj Mishra as Rajasthan Governor, replacing Kalyan Singh and senior BJP leader Bhagat Singh Koshiyari as Maharashtra Governor.
Mr Dattatreya, who served as Union Ministers in AB Vajpayee government and Narendra Modi government’s first tenure, will be the new Himachal Pradesh Governor.
Coming from RSS background, the five-time MP from Secunderabad, Mr Dattatreya has held various positions in the BJP at the state and national level.
A surprise appointment is that of Ms Soundararajan, whose tenure as BJP state president will end in December this year, as the new Telangana Governor, replacing ESL Narasimhan.
A doctor by profession, Ms Soundarajaran, who was Tamil Nadu BJP’s first woman president, was appointed in 2014.
Ms Soundararajan is the daughter of Congress leader Kumari Ananthan and niece of Congress MP H Vasanthakumar.
Though she was BJP’s star campaigner during 2014 polls, Ms Soundararajan could not win in electoral politics, as she unsuccessfully contested in two Assembly and two Parliamentary polls.
Mr Khan, who was a Union Minister in Rajiv Gandhi government had quit after differences over Shah Bano case, has been appointed as Kerala Governor, replacing P Sathasivam, former Chief Justice of India.
Mr Khan, a former Congress leader who had joined the BJP, though was inactive till recently, is a supporter of various initiatives by Narendra Moid government, including the abolition of Triple Talaq and abrogation of Article 370, which gave special status to Jammu and Kashmir.
Mr Koshyari, an RSS veteran and former Chief Minister of Uttarakhand, has been appointed as the new Governor of Maharashtra, replacing Vidyasagar Rao.
Mr Koshiyari had served as national vice president of BJP and party’s first state chief in Uttarakhand and was elected to both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha.
‘The above appointments will take effect from the dates they assume charge of their respective offices,’ a Rashtraparti Bhawan communique said.
