Senior Ministers including Boris Johnson and Liam Fox reiterate their commitment to Indo-UK partnership at High Commissioner’s reception for Conservative Friends of India
High Commissioner Navtej Sarna hosted a reception for the Conservative Friends of India on the side-lines of the Annual Conservative Party Conference in Birmingham on 3rd October 2016. The event was graced by the presence of many senior Cabinet Ministers including Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson, International Trade Secretary Liam Fox, Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government Sajid Javid, Chairman of the Conservative Party Patrick McLoughlin and Minister for Universities, Science, Research and Innovation Jo Johnson. They re-affirmed the Conservative party’s commitment towards an ever-stronger relationship with India, especially post-Brexit.
International Trade Secretary Liam Fox remarked that while historical ties and past engagements have been steadfast and strong, it is the shared future that makes the bilateral relationship between India and the UK so important. He called on the need to review the existing tariff and non-tariff barriers to reap the phenomenal potential of India-UK trade relations. Mr. Fox, who will be co-chairing the India-UK Joint Economic Trade Committee (JETCO) later this year, stressed his personal commitment to UK’s engagement with India.
Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson hailed the partnership between India and the United Kingdom and the potential of a stronger economic relations between the two countries with India as a huge market for British goods.
High Commissioner Navtej Sarna remarked that India cherishes its strategic partnership with the United Kingdom and is confident of a further strengthening and diversification of this important relationship. “India is committed to a stronger engagement with the United Kingdom in the years to come, given the interest levels of the two governments in the major economic initiatives undertaken in India”, the High Commissioner said. Co-Chairs of Conservative Friends of India Mr. Shailesh Vara MP and Mr. Ranjit Baxi thanked the High Commissioner for hosting the reception and expressed their commitment to continue to work together closely with the High Commission of India towards stronger India-UK ties.
