Karma for Dharma

BY Priya Lekha:We all take much pride and are extremely vigilant in regards to our family, especially our children – we keep them safe from outsiders and the hostility of the world. However we often forget delinquents and wrongdoers may be closer than we think – hidden in our loved ones just as they are hidden in strangers. For this reason, our vulnerable adolescents and family members in general become prey to these delinquents. We turn a blind eye to the signs because we would not suspect villainous behaviour from our own people in our wildest dreams. We fight for our people, against our own people causing the most torturous conflict yet the most vital too.

Lord Krishna lived by example rather than merely words, elucidating that in order to establish both dharma and truth, fights must be upheld. And whether that means conflict with your loved ones, fighting alone and despite winning or losing, justice MUST be served. It is upsetting that we disregard and ignore the presence of an ideal and great scripture like the Mahabharata. Disregarding is one thing however the superstitious connotations around the sacred book is worse – the idea that conflict will arise within the household post possessing the Mahabharata. I would like to request that we, together, choose to read and understand the Mahabharata and also educate the upcoming generations on the main values and preaching of Lord Krishna and how they apply to society today.

I too, have fought for justice for the victim, completely on my own. Despite the situation at hand itself, the most upsetting part was that I was not supported by my family – not the male figures and even worse, not by my women counterparts. Moreover I received threats, injuries,  defamation and mocking.

However I remained by my morals and the verses of Bhagwat Gita and maintained struggle in order to attain justice for the individual hurt due to the actions of someone else and in the end gained victory in doing so. My fight however, did not end here. I continuously attempted and succeeded in the amendment of the law, introducing a new bill in place which reinforces that nobody who is ever in my position, will have to struggle how I did to enforce justicA common myth is that child sexual abuse is perpetrated by strangers and pedophiles. But most people who sexually abuse children are our friends, partners, family members, and community members. Statistics show about 90 percent of children who are victims of sexual abuse know their abuser. Shockingly less than 10 percent of sexually abused children are abused by a stranger. Victims do not report these incidents due to the defamation and family pressure. It is a taboo and disturbing topic and people avoid discussing it. It is extremely important to take this serious issue into consideration and spread awareness in our society especially with young children.

While reminding all women and girls of the power you were blessed with when you were born, I urge you to get support and if there is no support just take a stand for yourself or your loved ones on your own if you ever face unfortunate and challenging circumstances.

I would like to conclude this with my poem in Hindi called  KAALA SACH (Dark Truth) which express the shock, vulnerability, family pressure, lack of support initially however gathering inner strength and fight for justice while reminding girls of their inner strength and power like Devi Mahishasurmardini to kill demons and gaining victory over evil eventually.

 She is Patriotic solo traveller and explorer travelled alone from Kashmir to Kanyakumari and many other countries promoting Indian culture and tourism. 

She is an embodiment of strength which all women must have, her life journey with all the upheavals is an inspiration. The way she handled things within the family and steered her children out of the trauma as a single mother is for others to be inspired. She became stronger, fought for justice for the victims and found voice in writing poetry for them. Her articles and poems are published within the UK and internationally. She won many hearts by reciting her poetry in different platforms to the victims of domestic violence and motivating them to survive with pride and dignity.
