An unforgettable evening of culture and devotion unfolded at The Bhavan in West Kensington recently as Rudra-Varenyam captivated audiences with its moving blend of poetry, music and classical dance. Conceived and presented by the Sanskuti Centre for Cultural Excellence, the programme transformed centuries-old spiritual compositions into visually stunning and emotionally powerful performances.

For the first time in the world ever, the 12th-century Aksharanka Padyas of Palkuriki Somanatha were choreographed in diverse classical dances, a significant milestone in the preservation and revival of traditional literature. Verses by revered spiritual masters and authors including Patanjali Muni, Chakrapani Ranganatha and Adi Shankaracharya were brought to life through expressive interpretations in Bharatanatyam, Kuchipudi, Mohiniattam, Kathak and Odissi.

The evening opened with a popular Shiva’s rendition by Shivani Gollapalli, and traditional lighting of the lamp, setting a devotional tone. After young dancers from Reading, West Drayton and surrounding areas have presented invocation, including Dhyana Shloka by Dr Srinivas Merugumala, Arya Menon and Sanvika Kommineni presented dance on Akashanka Padyas, followed by Guru Kajal Sharma, senior disciple of legendary Kathak maestro Birju Maharaj-ji, who delivered a commanding performance marked by intricate footwork and expressive storytelling. Ragasudha Vinjamuri presented on Patanjali Muni’s Chidambarashtakam, Manju Sunil presented on Chakrapani Ranganatha’s composition, Lakshmi Pillai, Sreyashi Deb Roy, Ramyani and Sreyasree presented on verses from Nataraja Stotra. The dancers’ energy and dedication resonated strongly with the audience who came from all over England.

The production’s powerful messaging centred on spiritual reflection and cultural continuity left a lasting impression, earning a continued applause and appreciation from attendees. Supported by Punjab National Bank and Wealthmax Consultants, and compered by author Ritesh Nigam, the event stood as a proud celebration of India’s timeless artistic heritage and community spirit.
