Beas Pind, Punjab(INDIA) | July 15, 2025 – The world has lost an extraordinary icon of endurance, faith, and human spirit. Fauja Singh, the British Indian marathoner globally celebrated as the “Turbaned Tornado,” has tragically passed away at the age of 114 following a fatal hit-and-run accident near his ancestral village of Beas Pind in Punjab.

Fauja Singh, a living legend, was not only the oldest marathon runner in the world but also a symbol of what the human body and mind can achieve when fuelled by resilience and purpose. Known for his flowing white beard, radiant energy, and unwavering faith, he captured global attention by completing marathons well into his 100s, long after most had stopped walking long distances, let alone running them.

Born on April 1, 1911, in Jalandhar, then part of British India, Singh’s early life was one of hardship and simplicity. His birth was never formally registered, a common practice at the time but his age was widely accepted by historians, fellow athletes, and fans. He emigrated to the United Kingdom later in life, where his passion for running blossomed into a global phenomenon.

Fauja Singh officially retired from competitive running in 2013 at the age of 101, after completing the Hong Kong 10K. But his legacy continued well beyond the track, he became a global ambassador for health, Sikh pride, senior citizen empowerment, and perseverance.

His admirers spanned generations and continents, from elite athletes and political leaders to school children inspired by his story. Fauja Singh featured in global campaigns for Adidas, ran alongside Olympic torchbearers, and was often referred to as the “Running Baba” and the “Sikh Superman.”

On July 14, 2025, while taking his routine early morning walk along the village outskirts, Fauja Singh was fatally struck by an unidentified vehicle that fled the scene. The local authorities are investigating, and tributes have begun pouring in from across the world. British Prime Minister, Indian leaders, Olympic athletes, and global human rights figures have all expressed sorrow and admiration.

His story has been chronicled in books, documentaries, and educational campaigns. His autobiography, “Turbaned Tornado”, remains a bestseller, and his life inspired countless runners to take their first step. In a time when division often dominates headlines, Fauja Singh stood as a unifying figure of hope and humanity.

His journey reminds young people that limits exist only in the mind. With discipline, faith, and determination, even the impossible becomes possible. His legacy encourages the next generation to chase their dreams fearlessly, stay active in body and spirit, and believe that every step forward counts, no matter when you start.
