On July 4, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit the Andhra Pradesh town of Bhimavaram and unveil a 30-foot statue of famous independence fighter Alluri Sitarama Raju as part of the government’s Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav. The Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) stated that the government was dedicated to honouring the contributions of freedom fighters as part of the Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav.

As part of the efforts, Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi will kick off the year-long commemoration of the heroic freedom warrior, Alluri Sitarama Raju, in Bhimavaram. The Prime Minister will address a public assembly and unveil a 30-foot bronze monument in Bhimavaram Park.

For the year-long commemoration, the government has planned a number of projects. As part of this, the government authorised the Alluri Dhyana Mandir building in Mogallu, which would incorporate Alluri Sitarama Raju’s memorial in the Dhyana Mudra and mural paintings reflecting the life of the freedom fighter using interactive technology driven by artificial intelligence (AI).

Alluri Sitarama Raju was a legendary freedom fighter who rallied the tribes of the Eastern Ghats to rise in revolt against British rule. The Rampa rebellion, which he led with unparalleled courage and bravery, raged from August 1922 to May 1924 and is known as one of the most intense uprisings to have challenged the writ of colonial power in the subcontinent. He is remembered for mounting daring raids to seize arms and ammunition from police stations in the Rampachodavaram, Addateegala, Devipatnam and Rajavommangi areas of the tribal backwoods in what is now the northern part of Andhra Pradesh. The raids were carried out in broad daylight after serving advance notice. Before leaving, he would leave a note detailing what was being taken away. There are records at several police stations that are evidence of his relentless campaign.

His birthday is celebrated not just in Andhra Pradesh but also in Telangana, Odisha and Karnataka. The freedom fighter’s life also inspired the fictionalised character played by Ram Charan in S.S. Rajamouli’s recent blockbuster RRR.
