Ahead of the 75th Independence Day on Sunday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi Saturday said the pain of partition can never be forgotten and announced that August 14 will be remembered as Partition Horrors Remembrance Day in memory of people’s struggles and sacrifices during that period.

“May Partition Horrors Remembrance Day keep reminding us of need to remove poison of social divisions & strengthen spirit of oneness,” said PM Modi.

“Partition’s pains can never be forgotten. Millions of our sisters and brothers were displaced and many lost their lives due to mindless hate and violence. In memory of the struggles and sacrifices of our people, 14th August will be observed as Partition Horrors Remembrance Day,” the Prime Minister tweeted.

He further said, “May the Partition Horrors Remembrance Day keep reminding us of the need to remove the poison of social divisions, disharmony and further strengthen the spirit of oneness, social harmony and human empowerment.”

India will be celebrating the 75th year of Independence on Sunday. The day is recognised as that of national pride and honour, with the Prime Minister hoisting the flag and addressing the country from the Red Fort every year. (I.E)

  1. !4th August- Modiji has rightly defined the day of “Partition horrors Remembrance day” . I was a 6 years old child and was living with my parents in Amritsar. I still cannot forget the burning of Amritsar Main bazars and houses. There was fire all around and touching almost the sky. Our house was in the outskirts of Amritsar So we use to go up on the roof and watch these fires. Burnt clothes and smoke use to passover the house. The Day of Horrors should not be celebrated but it should be remembered the day of shame.
