Mosaic of languages adorn Mother Language Day organised by Snskruti Centre

Poems and songs in multiple languages have adorned the International Mother Language Day celebrations recently.

Titled Kaavyanjali, the event organised by Sanskruti Centre for Cultural Excellence had 27 languages, including Lokeh, Meitei, Dingal, Ladakhi, Bishnupriya Manipuri, Maithili, Nepali and Dhivehi, among others. Roshan Kanal- Deputy Chief of Mission at the Embassy of Nepal in London, Hassan Shifau- former Deputy Ambassador at the High Commission of the Maldives in London, Tim Brookes, Founder of Atlas of Endangered Scripts have disseminated their messages that emphasise propagating and safeguarding the cultural roots and the languages, and commended Sanskruti Centre for engaging with the objective.

Presentations included Assamese poem by Bhaswati Gayan Dey, Bengali poem by Arindam Dhar, Dingal poem by John Gilchrist awardee Indu Barot, Dogri by Lalit Sharma, Gujarati poem by Mayura Patel, Hindi by Gyan Sharma, Himachali folk song by Dr Vipin Nadda, Kannada poem by Radhika Joshi, Kathiawadi poem by Dr Harsha Jani, Konkani by Mario Fernandes (Babit), Lokeh by Karma Barfungpa, Maithili poem by Sharad Jha, Malayalam by Deepa Nair, Marathi poem by Maithili More, Meitei song by Leina Moirangthem, Odia by Bhagyashree Singh, Saurashtra by Kamalini Somalinga, Sindhi Kalaam by Dr Nari Mansukhani, Sanskrit poem by Sushil Rapatwar, Tamil song by Dr Lakshmi Vyas and Telugu poem by Ragasudha Vinjamuri.

Acclaimed writer Dils Lakshmindra Sinha joined from Guwahati and presented Bishnupriya Manipuri poem, eminent poetess Ishtar Zikr joined from the Maldives and recited Dhivehi poem, noted composer-lyricist Rinchen Wacher joined from Ladakh and presented Ladakhi poem, Acharya Durga Prasad Pokhrel recited Nepali poem and, celebrated Punjabi singer Amrinder Bobby joined from Patiala and sang the song Ehsas, which underscores respect for womenfolk.

Co-Chair for the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Modern Languages Baroness Jean Coussins sent a wonderful message highlighting how valuing language skills can help build a fairer, healthier and more resilient society.

  1. Are these events online? It would’ve been nice to watch remotely. Proves that our culture knows no boundaries a tapestry of language and genre of cultural variety
