A team comprising UK designer Grimshaw Architects, Norconsult subsidiary Nordic Office of Architecture, English and Norwegian studio Haptic Architects and Indian practice STUP has been selected to design the new passenger terminal of Delhi Noida International Airport in Jewar, Uttar Pradesh, India.

The airport will cater to the fast-developing industrial region between Delhi and Agra.

The winners were picked from a shortlist of three teams by Flughafen Zürich AG, operator of Zurich Airport, which won the concession to design, build and operate Noida International last November.

Flughafen Zürich praised the design’s mix of “Swiss efficiency and Indian hospitality”, Grimshaw said, adding it would be “India’s greenest airport”.

Aiming to achieve carbon neutrality and LEED Gold certification, the design puts green spaces inside and around the building, including an internal landscaped courtyard and a landscaped forecourt.

Andrew Thomas, partner at Grimshaw, said: “This new visionary airport is vital to the rapid and continued economic development of the Delhi region and we look forward to working with Nordic and Haptic again drawing on our past experience from Istanbul Airport to create a truly sustainable and innovative new terminal.

“Our design will provide the best possible experience for passengers and staff while focussing on the key issues in aviation today such as passenger flow, digital services and rigorous carbon minimisation targets”.

The design allows future expansion to accommodate 30 million passengers a year.

  1. This is a great example as commented before post Brexit deal how UK and India can be complimentary to each other in commerce, technical know how and business. Environment and green issues will be at the forefront of world’s issues in 21st century and this initiative will pave way to innovate and utilise more techniques to reduce carbon emissions
