Indian Languages highlighted at British Parliament

Linguistic and cultural diversity is important for sustainable societies. Preserving and increasing awareness of indigenous heritage is a paramount duty of the communities and institutions. Treading in this direction, 17 Indian languages were heard at the House of Commons of British Parliament marking 20th anniversary of UNESCO’s International Mother Language Day. Hosted by Bob Blackman MP and organised by Sanskruti Centre for Cultural Excellence, the event on 12th March highlighted some rarely heard languages in the UK such as Saurashtra, Bishnupriya Manipuri, Magahi and Ladakhi, having been presented for the very first time on British soil.

Ragasuda-2                         Book release of Incense – Kaavya Sugandha

A booklet of poems titled “Incense-Kaavya Sugandha” was released on the occasion, which included unique scripts such as Takri, Khudavadi, Maithili and Sharda. Specially written for the occasion, the poems covered a variety of interesting topics that touched the emotional cords of the presenters, who came from different parts of England.

Presenters included Anupama Handoo, Ashish Mishra, Bhavika Ramrakhyani, Chanda Jha, Inderpal Chandel, Kamalini Kausik, Lekshmi Pillai, Lumbini Bafna, Manu Khajuria, Dr Sahadev Swain, Sanchita Das, Sangeeta Prasad, Sharad Jha, Tonoya Barua Chaudhari, Dr Vikas Kumar and Dr Vipin Nadda and young children Anushka Upadhyay, Shreya Khare and Tvisha Raorane.

Founder of Sanskruti Centre Ragasudha Vinjamuri has highlighted the need of creating a legacy for the next generations and urged parents to take an active role in generating interest and keenness among the young.

Bob Blackman was honoured for having been conferred Padma Shri by the Government of India. Shikha Varshney has been appreciated for her role in language promotion in the UK. Audiences had an excellent response to the content of the event.
