The 2019 Diwali on Trafalgar Square Event organised by the Mayor of London in Partnership with the Diwali in London Committee, kicked off on Sunday 3rd November at 1 o’clock, With a highly anticipated and unique Annakut (mountain of food) grand opening dance performance delivered by over 200 dazzling dancers, adorned in swirling Indian skirts and traditional wear, in breathtaking cadence with a fun atmospheric medley of music from special regions spanning India.
With this vast majestic kaleidoscopic performance warming up the penchant for dance, young and old from all backgrounds were then invited to participate in the traditional dance from the vibrant state of Gujarat in India, to a live musical performance by the young popular singer Pritee Varsani.
Mayor of London Sadiq Khan presented a beautiful garland to Lord Ganesh, beloved Hindu deity, remover of obstacles and addressed the thousands of Diwali revelers packing out the iconic Trafalgar Square, speaking about how the festival of light unites and creates harmony for people of all faiths and those of none in London and all over the world.
Her Excellency Mrs. Ruchi Ghanashyam, High Commissioner of London addressed the huge gathering, congratulating and thanking the Mayor of London and 14 Indian organisations forming the Diwali in London Committee involved in organising this spectacular event. She extended Diwali wishes to all present. Reflecting on the Indian Diaspora in the UK she stated our joy of celebration is multiplied 1.7 million times.
Youth representatives from each of the 14 partners of the Diwali in London Committee formed a beautiful back drop for the Diva lighting ceremony by the 2019 chairs following recital of the Gayatri Mantra and prayers for invoking all that is positive as we light our Diwali lamps delivered by Pundit Mr Sharma.
The nonstop stage show, comprising of invigorating and soul stirring dance and musical performances continued until 7pm including headline acts such as Arjun Coomaraswamy, Internationally acclaimed dancer Arunima Kumar and famous Indian actor Suhani Dhanki.
There was a golden thread of rich Telegu culture embellishing the 2019 event inspired by the Chairpersons of the 2019 Diwali in London planning committee Mallesh Kota and Anita Nomula, who are first generation UK residents from this region.
This free entry event showcased exciting interactive Indian experiences, including the opportunity to wear and keep either a majestic turban or the national Indian dress, a Sari. Arts & crafts to entertain and educate the youngsters and Ramayana, the Ancient Indian epic portrayed theatrically by adept puppeteers. Presentations & demonstrations of the ancient Indian Martial Art form Kalaripayattu were appreciated together with Introduction to Dharmic philosophy. Dance workshops delivered by professional Indian artistes were oversubscribed throughout the day!
To unwind, gentle yoga and meditation experiences were also on offer.
The intermittent rain did not dampen the spirits of the thousands gathered at Diwali on Trafalgar Square for all in all a brilliantly dazzling day out and utterly delightful experience for mind, body and soul.
