Congress president Rahul Gandh on Wednesday tendered an unconditional apology to the Supreme Court for wrongly attributing his “chowkidar chor hai” remark to the apex court and sought closure of the contempt proceedings against him.
In a three-page affidavit, Gandhi said he holds the court in “highest esteem and respect”.The Congress chief submitted that he “has never sought or intended to, directly or indirectly, commit any act that interferes with the process of administration of justice”.
Gandhi pleaded that the court may “accept the instant affidavit and close the present contempt proceedings”.
Senior lawyer Abhishek Manu Singhvi, who appeared for the Congress president, had told a bench headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi on April 30 that Gandhi will tender an apology.
The bench had given time till May 6 to the Congress chief for filing a fresh affidavit for attributing the “chowkidar chor hai” remark to the apex court’s April 10 Rafale case order.

The contempt case against Rahul Gandhi was filed by the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP’s) Meenakshi Lekhi for allegedly incorrectly attributing the slogan to the preliminary verdict of the top court in the Rafale case. Lekhi had asked the court to initiate criminal contempt action against Gandhi for twisting the top court’s April 10 judgment to claim that the court declared Prime Minister Narendra Modi guilty of corrupt practices in purchase of the Rafale aircraft.

  1. Recently political leaders from all the parties in India are directly accusing and abusing each other which is bringing shame to India and Indians in all over the world. It should stop and these party leaders should tell us what will be their proposals and how these leaders and parties will improve the living conditions of the people.

  2. This 50 year old adolescent as he is known by many Indians finally realises that he can not get away by saying anything against PM Modi who upto now has been restrained. Having watched his BJP rally speech in Ramlila Maidan in Delhi this week, it is abundantly clear that Modiji has lost his statesmanly patitnence. When at least ten opposition leaders gang up and start calling him (and his family) names then no honest person can tolerate. In return he mentioned about a private holiday trip to Lakshdweep islands by late PM Rajiv Gandhi with his wife’s Italian family and Indian friends on INS Vikrant verified by service vetarans and more to come. It is election and fair criticism should be allowed but not lies spewed out by Congress
