Surrey have announced that India captain Virat Kohli will be signing for them for the month of June.

Director of cricket Alec Stewart has secured the services of the superstar batsman once his duties in the Indian Premier League (IPL) with Royal Challengers Bangalore are complete, with the Indian cricket board (BCCI) hoping a month in the county game should help Kohli adapt to English conditions ahead of this summer’s tour.

The 29-year-old batsman will feature in three County Championship matches and at least three One-Day Cup games. Described as “the biggest name in world cricket” by Surrey’s director of cricket, Alec Stewart, upon completion of the deal on Thursday, said “Kohli will be available to play in the club’s Royal London Cup matches during that month and three County Championship fixtures.”

Kohli, who averages more than 50 in all formats for India, will lead India in a five-match Test series in England starting on 1 August.

“It’s long been an ambition of mine to play county cricket and I’m thankful to Alec Stewart and Surrey for allowing me the opportunity,” Kohli said.
