India starts work on world’s biggest cricket stadium

India has started work on the world’s biggest cricket ground in the Gujarati city of Ahmedabad. When complete the $100m Sandar Patel stadium will hold 110,000 spectators.

It will be home to the Gujarat Lions cricket team.

At a ground-breaking ceremony held at the end of last month, Parimal Nathwani, vice president of the Gujarat Cricket Association, said the venue would also house 76 corporate boxes, four dressing rooms a clubhouse and an Olympic-size swimming pool, as well as practice grounds and a cricket academy.

The current holder of the largest cricket ground title is Melbourne Cricket Ground, also known as “The G”, which can hold around 100,000 people.

When complete in two years’ time, the stadium will be the second largest in the world, ahead of the Michigan Stadium of the Wolverines American Football team (108,000) but behind the Rungrado 1st of May Stadium of the North Korean national football team in Pyongyang (pictured), which holds 114,000.
