The Congress leader further fuelled the controversy with his subsequent tweets holding the Telangana police responsible for the Saifullah encounter in Kanpur.

Hyderabad: Senior Congress leader and AICC general secretary Digvijaya Singh on Monday whipped up a controversy on Twitter with a tweet accusing the Telangana Police of running a fake ISIS website to trap Muslim youth. An instant objection from Telangana IT Minister KT Rama Rao elicited no direct reply and the Minister’s challenge either to prove the charge or withdraw the controversial tweet also went unanswered.

The Congress leader further fuelled the controversy with his subsequent tweets holding the Telangana Police responsible for the Saifullah encounter in Kanpur. Rama Rao, who responded to the first tweet, tweeted saying it was the “most irresponsible and reprehensible thing coming from a former CM”. The IT Minister also requested Singh to ‘withdraw the comments unconditionally or provide evidence’.

Telangana Director General of Police Anurag Sharma too tweeted expressing his dismay over the charges levelled. “Unfounded allegations from a senior responsible leader will lower the morale and image of police engaged in fighting anti-national forces,” the DGP said.

Even as Twitterati responded angrily and ridiculed him, Singh did not appear to be relenting, but prolonged the issue with more tweets. Without providing any evidence for his allegations, he went on to ask whether Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao had “authorised Telangana Police to trap Muslim youths and encourage them to join ISIS”, asking the CM to take action against police or “own responsibility and resign”.

Angry response from Twitterati
Several hundreds of Twitter users replied to the tweet, asking Singh to provide proof for the ‘wild allegation’. Some pointed out that it was the Telangana Police that had successfully busted several ISIS modules, and that one of the country’s most efficient investigative agencies was now being maligned with ‘baseless’ allegations. Some went to the extent of saying that the Hyderabad police should arrest Singh and ‘question him on what basis he was accusing security services of misconduct’.

Majlis Bachao Tehreek leader Amjed Ullah Khan tweeted Singh, wanting to ‘know whether police were not involved in such activities in Congress regime’. He also tweeted that Singh had a habit for accusing “without logic or documentary evidences”.

Telangana Police has set up a bogus ISIS site which is radicalising Muslim Youths and encouraging them to become ISIS Modules.

@digvijaya_28 I am ready to believe you of trapping Muslim Youth, But want to know whether Police was not involved in such activities in Congress regime.

Complaint lodged
A few hours later, Telangana Rashtra Samithi’s Jubilee Hills legislator Maganti Gopinath and his associates lodged a complaint with the Jubilee Hills police against Singh, who is currently on a Telangana tour.

In the complaint, they alleged that Singh, through his tweets, was promoting enmity between different communities and groups and demanded action against him. The Jubilee Hills police are seeking legal opinion before proceeding with the case.

Senior cops object
Meanwhile, senior police officials and retired DGPs took strong exception to Singh’s remarks.
“It’s nothing but a highly irresponsible statement made by a senior politician who worked as a Chief Minister. Why will police officials take risk of creating a fake ISIS site? Superiors will not permit such acts,” said retired director general of police C Anjaneya Reddy, who had played a crucial role in setting up the Intelligence Department in the State.

Former CBI director and minister K Vijaya Rama Rao said Singh appeared to have made the remarks without any basis. False statements should not be made for mere political purposes, he said.

Telangana IPS Officers Association secretary Anjani Kumar said the Telangana Police stood top in the country for the last two and half years in introducing IT initiatives and tackling Maoists before and after the formation of the State. In this backdrop, Singh’s remarks were certainly not desirable, he said, adding such statements would demoralize the police personnel.

  1. Surely not.
No wonder he has been degraded and demoted by the Congress High Command recently.
